Are broadband bundles actually cheaper?

Prices & contractsBy Daniel Hartley7 min readUpdated 25 October 2026

Every large provider prices bundles below the sum of their parts. That is not generosity — it is arithmetic designed to make the comparison impossible, because once three services are on one bill at one price, you can no longer see what each one costs.

Sometimes the bundle genuinely is cheaper. Often it is cheaper only because you are buying something you would not otherwise have bought.

Bundles usually save money if you genuinely want every component on the list. They cost more if one component is filler. The test is simple: price each service separately at full rate, add them up, and compare against the bundle over the full minimum term including annual rises. If the gap is under about 10%, the bundle is not a saving — it is a lock-in.

Why the discount exists

Three commercial reasons, none of them about giving you value.

  • Churn reduction. A customer with three services on one bill is far less likely to switch than one with a single service, so the provider can afford to discount the bundle and still come out ahead.
  • Cost averaging. Television and mobile have different margin structures from broadband. Bundling lets the provider blend a low-margin broadband line with higher-margin extras and present one attractive number.
  • Comparison friction. No comparison site can price a three-service bundle against a two-service one. The complexity itself is the product.

What a bundle actually contains— scroll sideways

ComponentTypical separate costReal value to you
Broadband£24 – £45/monthHigh — you need it
TV£10 – £40/monthDepends entirely on whether you watch it
Mobile SIM£6 – £20/monthOnly if your current SIM is worse
Landline£0 – £12/monthUsually zero for most households

Ranges are typical UK market prices in October 2026, not quotations. The right-hand column is the only one that matters.

The two costs bundles hide

The first is contract length. Bundles frequently require 24 months where the broadband alone would be 18. Six extra months at £45 is £270, which will usually exceed the bundle discount.

The second is the annual rise. It applies to the whole bundle price, not just the broadband component. A £3 rise on a £30 broadband package is 10%; the same £3 rise on a £65 bundle is 4.6% — which sounds better until you notice you are paying £36 more per year rather than £36 more per year on a smaller base. The absolute cost is identical, but the bundle makes it harder to see.

How to price it properly

  • Write down what you would buy if bundles did not exist. Be honest about the TV.
  • Price those components separately, at full rate, from any provider.
  • Take the bundle price and add the annual rise for each year of the term.
  • Compare the two totals. If the bundle is not at least 10% cheaper, take the separate deal and keep your flexibility.
  • Check whether removing one component from the bundle is possible. Often it is, and the price barely moves.

When bundling does make sense

If you watch the television, the TV component has real value and the bundle is straightforwardly better than buying the parts. The same applies to a mobile SIM if your current one is more expensive for the same allowance.

It also makes sense if you value having one bill and one support number. That is a legitimate preference — just recognise it as a convenience you are paying for rather than a discount you are receiving.

The exit problem

Bundles make leaving more complicated, not less. Cancelling one component mid-contract usually reprices the others at standard rate, which can leave you paying more for two services than you were paying for three.

Before signing, ask one question: if I cancel the TV in month eight, what happens to the broadband price? Get the answer in writing. Our guide on [leaving a contract early](/guides/leaving-a-contract-early) covers what happens when you exit the whole thing.
